Sweden was announced today as the third country joining Canada and the U.S. for the third annual Chrysler Nations' Cup scheduled for Kanata Golf and Country Club, August 27 & 28 in Kanata, Ontario. Sweden replaces Korea, which was previously announced as the third country in the annual match-play event. Scheduling conflicts meant that the top Korean players would not be available.
After two years of head-to-head matches between the Canadians and Americans in 1999 and 2000, the 2001 event will feature an innovative new playing format. Each team will be comprised of three players who will play
three matches over two days. The matches will be played in threesomes with each player in a simultaneous match-play competition against the other two women. The nation with the most points accumulated over the two-day competition will win the cup.
The three-player Swedish squad will be led by Solheim Cup veteran and LPGA winner Charlotta Sorenstam. The other two Team Sweden players will be announced in the next several days.
A strong Canadian team will feature 4-time LPGA winner Lorie Kane, 3-time Tour winner Dawn Coe-Jones and rising LPGA star and former Canadian Ladies Amateur Champion A.J. Eathorne.
48-time LPGA winner Nancy Lopez will lead the U.S. Team as they attempt to defend the Chrysler Nations' Cup. Joining Lopez will be 2-time du Maurier Classic winner Brandie Burton and 3-time Tour winner Nancy Scranton.
"The changes to this year's format represent what we have always seen as a natural evolution for the event", said Michael Merrall, Senior Vice- President and Managing Director of tournament organizer IMG-Canada. "In attracting such a world class line-up from Canada and the U.S. and adding a third country as deep in talent as Sweden, Canadian golf fans are going to get a chance to see some remarkable golf."
Chrysler returns to support this event for a third year, joining co-
sponsors TELUS, Tehama, Maxfli, Husky Energy, Melitta and Weetabix. This event is sanctioned by the Canadian Ladies Golf Association (CLGA), the governing body for Ladies amateur golf in Canada. The tournament will once again be broadcast nationally on August 27 and 28 on CBC.
Tickets for the Chrysler Nations' Cup will go on sale next week, more information to follow.
