personally i would rather a greenside bunker shot than a greenside pitch from the rough, much easier to hit consistently and with better control

Although I'm more likely to get it nice and close from the bunker, there's also a better chance of throwing away a stroke or two (yep, I'm one of those guys). So, although that 50 yard pitch is a nemesis of mine, on most days I'd take that over a bunker.

If all bunkers were similar... But they are not, so a 50 yard wedge is more consistant for me. I don't mind a greenside bunker shot with decent sand, but I love sticking a pitch shot from the rough.

Bunker any day. As long as I get it out it will end up on the green while the 50 yarder could end up being a 45 yarder or in the bunker.

If the sand is firm, the bunker shot is a lot easier to get close.

If the sand is soft then a pitch shot from a tight lie with a spin ball may be the better choice.

This question is almost unfair in my case because where I practice at has a 50 yard sign and I spend a lot of time hitting balls off of it. (sign is about 20 inches high) I will get within 4 feet of the fifty yard hole 90% of the time maybe even higher. I only get up and down from a greenside bunker 50% of the time, so the 50 yard pitch shot wins out, although if you made it a 60 yard pitch I would take the bunker but just barely.

Its the pitch shot from the fairway for me. (Or the rough for that matter) I never hit the 50 yard pitch 3 feet, or 150 yards which has been known to happen from the bunker.

As others have said, there are lots of variables such as lie in the bunker, type of sand, etc. but in general, greenside bunker for me.

I can generally pitch very close, but the odd bunker shot will disapear over the horizon. Happened two days ago at Metcalfe. 12 feet from the pin in a bunker on a par three, and thought I would do one my neat shots with a 60 degree wedge (they usually work) This one was gone....over the green into the rough. It took 6 to get down.

For me it depends on the bunker - if it is soft sand, I would choose the bunker - I have a tendency to skull the bunker shot from hard sand. Otherwise, I will take my chances with the 50-yard shot from the fairway.

Bunker, bunker and more bunker for me. Anyone who has played with me knows I am not a good chipper of the ball. Some days it is on but I am more consistent from the sand.
