L.A. Times Article: Golf Boom Over?
Greetings ...
An Article from the Oct 29 2005 Los Angeles Times RE Golf Course Communities
I've often wondered if the well has run dry (or close to it) in a number of different industries. Could golf course communities be one of them?Last edited by FrankoSport; 10-30-2005 at 04:02 PM.

I've heard this as well and know of several courses (and a few not that old) being turned into housing developments in Myrtle Beach since the land is worth more as houses than as a course (since there's so many of them of them down there).
Also, how many new $600 drivers does one need to buy? Technology has come a long way in the past 5-10 years such that the new drive, wedge, putter, ball, etc. will likely offer minimal improvement over the previous versions.....I got a fever. And the only prescription is more golf equipment.

Although I feel the gorwth of golf is slowing, courses getting sucked up by development in Myrtle Beach is not so much a factor of golf "shrinking" but that Myrtle Beach is exploding in growth of retirees. The baby boom in the US is starting to retire, and the population growth in the south is wild. I read that in 10 year (or so) Florida will be the most populated state (although the current weather trends may slow that down). The Carolinas offer a cheaper alternative and are growing very quickly as well.

The golf industry is saturated.. Supply has exceeded demand.

There are still new courses being developed, but they tend to be higher end tracks that cost more. The fact is the growth of players has slowed, and some of the older courses are sitting on prime land. Just look at the Hunt Club here in Ottawa. There has been several rumours about moving it somewhere else and developing the land.
It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others.
