Chief, do you have a copy of this book everyone is talking about? Could I borrow it from you if you have already read it?

290 pages to be exact. But once you start you won't be able to put it down. No mind boggling formulas.

I played with two drivers this summer. One 44* and the other 45* (maybe closer to 46*). Even though the shorter shafted driver was considerably smaller (370 compared to 460) my distance and accuracy was much, much better with the shorter shaft.

THE SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT GOLF CLUB by Tom Wishon is the best book on golf I have ever read!
After reading this book, I had my club builder assemble a 42" driver, using a 180cc steel head with 12 degrees of loft, Dynamic Gold R400 shaft untipped, with tour wrap style grips.
This club looks like the original TaylorMade steel woods, feels great when I swing it. Unfortunately, everything is under snow and I have yet to hit a ball with it?!

Hi Chief, I'm trying to do some measurements with my clubs, but can't determine how to measure the length that we always refer to; should it be measured from the butt end to the hosel, or to bottom of the club, or somewhere else? I cannot find the answer even in my Wishon books (don't have the clubmaker one though) Thanks!

Measure along the shaft from the butt end of the club to the ground when the club is at it's normal address position.

What J Vincent said. I lean the club against a wall on a flat surface.Something like that:

The USGA does it differently than most clubmakers i.e 60 degree angle.

I see, so the measurement might extend beyond the tip of the shaft (as should with all irons)... got it! Thanks Jeany!!

how long are the professional long driver's drivers? I thought it had a major impact on head speed & distance
-
11-17-2006 04:52 PM #51
The long drivers have a limit of 47" or 48" but it's measured differently than the normal way. They essentially put the driver against a wall and measure from where the toe of the club hits the ground to the butt.
The key to the long drivers is that they hit very low lofted clubs (5* or 6*) and hit with an upwards angle of attack.

Hi jvicient, just realize that I wrongly address you as Jeany (who started the thread)... my apology!
Speaking of long drivers, I have the honour to witness Jason Zuback practicing on many occasions. I usually go to a local outdoor driving range that opens all year round (yes, with the snow on the ground and heaters above our heads). I usually go very late in Saturday afternoon due to work and he's there sometimes. I think the reason why he usually go there late in the evening is because of that the driving range is a double-ended one and they sometimes have group lessons on the opposite end during the day time. He propably can't yell "FORE" loud enough to warn the folks on the other end... Great guy!

Interesting! Does hitting a low lofted driver on an upwards angle of attack have less accuracy then? I am just wondering if this gives more distance why isn't that the norm. for swinging the driver. What does the really long PGA players do? Daly, Holmes etc. From what I have seen Tiger either swings level or down on it. I noticed off the tee he even took a divot with one of his woods.

newbie here so late on this thread....but Tom Wishon offers great , no nonsence, and helpful advice....he also designs wonderful clubs.
In general I agree that most people play too long a driver and would benfit from a shorter one......what length is best requires experimentation..
best to get some impact labels, or masking tape even talcum powder and go to the range and try your driver and see what type of center contact you get , then choke it a 1/2 and an inch and do the same....look at center contact, trajectory and distance.......generally better center contact translates to better distance
wrist to floor is only one fitting parameter so many other issues come into in evaluating and getting a driver right, such as swing issues, shaft flex, club weight and swing weight , club toe droop etc...
finally, the better athleticism someone has and better hand eye coordination the longer a driver they will likely be able to play with success
