Is it possible to 'patch' or refinish a chip in a forged iron? I hit a rock under the turf and chipped my PW. It's right on the sole of the club. Any ideas appreciated.

If it's on the sole and not visible don't worry about it since it doesn't affect playability.

Unless there was a chunk of metal lying beside the rock , then all you did was put a deep scratch or gouge the club head .
You could probably dress out most of the damage with a decent sheetmetal hammer , but unfortunately it would never look perfect .
Adding metal would only change the weight of the head though the difference would be minimal , welding changes the properties of metal , and could affect the temper of the forged steel too .
