we will see, how much do you play a week bubba?
Usually 2-3 rounds. Some 9 holes with the little guy after work and a mix of 18 here and there. Thus far I have been trying to chip and put 2-3 timrs per week as well. No real range time as I use the range on the sim for full shots and the practice green for chip shots. Now if I had one of those practice greens at home outside (or in the basement) then awesome.
i am only going to have a little setup in the room that the sim is in. I only play 1 time a week and i live on a golf course. i need to get my priorities in line
Live on a course!! That's heaven. Try and get out more 70's. Even the occasional 9'er
i know i can play 9 before the sun goes down, i am going to start doing that.
I think knowing the launch angle is useful for driver practice and play. I have been testing the launch angle cam all week and trying to keep my driver launch angle at 14 degrees or so. Played a round today and hit 10/14 fairways. 4 missed were still in play. I am going to continue keeping an eye on my launch angle with the driver for sure.
Any sim users have updates on real game play with their simulator practice?
10/14? Wow! That is awesome.
I am happy with that. And that is balls in the fairway. the 4 missed were in 3 the rough and one in the woods (not deep) that I punched out and still parred the hole with a good iron shot to 6 feet. Crazy game. I have only been to the range once this year so far. I hit irons and driver on the sim range and go to practice chip/puts on the real course. How is your game Z?
My game is defintely improving. Especially with the driver. When I pratice on the sim, I make sure the ball starts about 1.5-2 deg right of target(same for you?) and a LA of about 13-15. My path is always in-out for a normal swing. For a fade I just try to get the opposite. I'm still trying to figure out the same for my irons.
For the short game, I just concentrate on the stroke. Like you, I'll practice that outside.
Good points. I like the launch feature especially for the driver. It allows for great practice.
Had a bit of a setback due to a fire. Had to get new clubs and they are a little harder to hit but am seeing improvements now in ball striking etc. Scores aren't really coming down but practice time has taken a huge hit this year due to the fire. Had hoped to see bigger improvements considering the ridiculous amount of time I put in on the sim during the winter. Consistency has improved dramatically. I have a much looser grip pressure (gloves stand up a lot better) and I have better distance and accuracy with woods and driver (10-20 yards each)
I then went back to basic 7 weeks ago.
Just taking half swings with a 9 iron for an hour then another hour with a longer club every day.
That was all on the DD checking the swing path, center hit and club face on every swing. After 8-10 days I was surprised how far I hit the balls with those half swings and started to swing 3/4 and full swings going back to 1/2 swings if things started to go bad.
Now it is exactly 2 years ago I hit a golf ball for the first time and one year ago I got a DD.
Until for 2 weeks ago I had never been under 80 and had only scored 81 once!
The last two weeks I have scored under 80 no less than 3 times with a 77 here Saturday on a course I play often and 79 one week ago on a course I had never played before.
I have practiced putting and chipping quit a bit too and that has helped too.
So while I could have practiced those 1/2 swings without the simulator I am sure I would not have spend two hours taking half swings without the feed back from the simulator. Just to boring!
Now it is a joy to practice because I can see and feel the results. Also I have played rounds from the par 3 tee (DD) with just 1/2 swings.
I hoped for a more consistent swing but never expected that I would also hit that much longer! Have added more than a club.
My golf friends also noticed not only the score but also a lot more fluent swing.
A faster more controlled swing and more consistent center hits.
Had earlier begun to think that maybe I was not able to go under 80. Now I did have a few good breaks on all 3 rounds but what I really like was that my misses was not as bad as they used to be.
Guess all the golf instruction books are right! Work on the fundamentals.
Very good syhlif32. Keep up the good work.
I am proud to report that I've finally broken 80. Shot a 79 today with a bogey on the last hole. Came within 2 inches of a hole in one on a 130 yard par 3. Lately, I've been having a hard time drawing the ball with the driver on the course and on the simulator. Hitting a fade has been pretty easy. Earlier in the season, it was the opposite.
I decided to just play the fade with the driver today and it worked out great. No worries about pushing the ball into the other fairway. I believe the simulator helped with my ball striking. I hit a 4 iron off the tee on a narrow fairway par 5 that went 200 yards straight down the middle.
I've been shooting mid to low 80s the last few weeks and finally broke through today.:)
Thanks bubba22. My goal is to get to single digit like you.
Congratulation!
I know how much practice it takes.
thanks syhlif32.
I went under 80 rounds 3 times in the row. Now 2 weeks later I have not even been close in 5 tries since :-(
Start to think it is a mental thing.
Worrying about the score?
Sorry to hear that. Have you been falling apart in the last few holes of each round? When I'm doing well, I'll let everybody know that I don't want know my score or what I need to do to shoot a particular number.
Wait a minute...are you saying there's a mental side to golf? No way! :)
I've had a similar experience. Earlier this year thanks to the work on the simulator (TARGETED practice with good feedback) I was striking the ball the best I have in my entire life. I shot an 83 with 6 penalty strokes and two 3-putts, and an 82 with 38 putts (just my short game held me back). Last month I broke 80 with a 78 (first time in years). My three rounds since then? 91, 92, 91. Bloody game.
I have fallen apart pretty much from the beginning of the rounds.
Not been able to forget bad shots and then tried much too hard to catch up.
Hope to get out Saturday and will try to only focus on the next shot.
My ball striking has also improved a lot with help form the feed back on the simulator.
Putting too but that is with the help of a 10' indoor putting mat!
Best $39 I have spend on golf equipment!
Just give you confidence that you can cup those 5-6 feet putts every time.
If I now could just find a $39 mental trainer on Amazon.com :-)
I hear you syhlif32. I am struggling with my driver now. Keep plugging away, it will come.
Due to thunder and very strong winds we only played 9 holes Saturday and a fair bit of practice before that. I had a great 9 holes due to really good putting. + 3 after the 9 holes.
Thursday I checked myself on video and found that I did not turn my shoulders fully, not much lag and elbows flying all over the place.
Strange because I thought I had that sorted out.
A few week ago a pro told me that I should stop lift the heel of my left foot during the back swing.
So focusing keeping the left heel down the rest of the swing felt apart!
I now lift the left heel again and the swing feels solid again also the DD confirm that.
Not sure if it is bad or not but it feels right for me to lift the heel during the back swing?
Just wanted other people that struggle that sometimes it is such a small thing that courses the wheels to come off.
Hope I remember to setup the video cam next time things goes wrong.
I don't think there's any right or wrong approach on the left heel. I think more modern pros will push to keep the left heel planted and create tension/torque in your body twisting, but whatever works works. I'm the opposite...I used to lift my left heel and have my left knee "break down" inward on my back swing, and the pro I saw this spring had me focus on keeping my left knee in place and foot plated, and it made a big positive difference. Recently I was struggling (a few bad rounds around 90) and realized I'd fallen back on that bad habit and my swing had gotten too long. This weekend I worked on correcting that (keep left knee and foot solid, restrict length of backswing) on the simulator and saw a big improvement. Today I played a round and struck the ball really well...6 over on the front with a triple and a double, and 2 over on the back. It was a lot more fun than shooting 90. :)
I used to lift the left heel also but now I keep it planted and just allow the weight to move to the inside of left foot.
Played two rounds since shooting 79. Shot 85 and 84. All thanks to the short game. The 85 included a 9 on a par 5.:redface
My chipping and pitching have been amazing. A lot of practice(outside) and playing is paying off big time.
Good to hear you found your game again.
I have tried keeping my left heel down and see no difference! ( On the simulator)
Just forgot everything else because of the focus on then heel :-(
But I guess you guys are right better keep the heel down.
Tomorrow I go away for work for 10 weeks. Hope not all my progress will be lost.
What got me started on the right path was a book (pdf) called Encyclopedia_Texarkana.pdf
Somebody here on this forum wrote about it.

Alright...here's my quantifiable results from using the simulator. Keep in mind the improvement isn't "caused" by the simulator. It's been a process of making swing changes, taking a few lessons, and then being able to practice regularly because of the simulator (in the past I didn't have the time to hit the range regularly, and winter practice has been a huge help). Two years ago (in 2009) I only golfed three times. All three rounds were over 100. I was horrible. I wasn't keeping my handicap, but it certainly would have been somewhere in the 20-30 range. That's the year I invested in my simulator and decided to work on getting my golf game back (as a teenager, I was an 8 handicap at one point...so keep that in mind too). This year I've generally been shooting in the low 80s with a couple rough rounds in the 90 range. Last week I was 82 with a blow-up 9 on a par 4, and yesterday I shot 80 with a triple bogey and a couple very short missed putts (one was 2 feet). After entering that round in my tracking software, my handicap is now to an 11. I'm pretty thrilled with that, as my ultimate goal is to get to 8 or 9. Hopefully next year!
Great job rdh. Those last two rounds should have been in the 70's. Last week I shot a 74 on a par 65 with 7 pars in a row. But a few days ago at a different course, I had a rough front 9 and ended up shooting 89.
This Tuesday, I will be at the BMW Championship to watch the practice round in the morning and then play one of the Coghill courses in the afternoon.
Wow...am I jealous. I wish I was doing that Tuesday. Have a great time!
