My initial reaction was actually that it could be a blessing in disguise. I figured if we had got a solid second and third liner, and maybe a 5th/6th d-man (basically the trade with Edmonton), it could be a good turning point for the franchise. At this point, he's almost untradeable, and I doubt whether he'd bring a decent price in return.
Kovalev to Ottawa. No details yet.
Now...can Clouston make him work?
That's wild. Not too sure I understand how he's to fit into the system given Clouston's apparent lack of patience. Could be a short lived experiment.
2 years $10M. Not sure how that fits in the cap with Heatley still here?
Kovalev:scratchch
Wow!!! Didn't see that coming. Don't know how I feel about this one. Nervous would best describe it I guess.
Kovalev's work ethic is much underrated. He can be a bit temperamental but when he is on he is one of the best and most entertaining players in the game. He may have been the only player this year who even tried for Montreal in the Playoffs. Great signing for Ottawa.
Whatever it is...work ethic, stubbornness. He just doesn't show up some nights..you never know which one you're going to get. It's a shame really...he's probably the most talented player in the league, when he chooses to play. It's amazing how he takes over a game.
Heatley has a no movement clause, they can't send him to the minors and they can't waive him either. I love Kovalev and wish the Habs had kept him, but doesn't signing him further weaken Murray's hand with Heatley? If the Sens are over the cap now, other teams can just wait Murray out until he gets desperate to get under the cap by the deadline.
Maybe there's a blockbuster deal in the works that Kovalev is a part of.
Kovalev to Ottawa
2 year contract= $10,000,000

Also, the Leafs have picked up Beauchemain for 3 years at 3.8 per year. Personally, I'm getting sick and tired of Brian Burke improving the Maple Leafs. The trash talk this year is going to have to get a lot more creative, because I don't think "my 9 year old cousin could play better D" is going to apply any more.
Not so sure about this one. We'll see how it goes. I just hope he decides to not be lazy for these two years..
Seem to recall that he had to be sat down last year in Montreal and given an attitude adjustment. Do the Sens need this? There must be something in the works for the Heater if they will drop this coin on a guy with this many miles on him.
We all know and talk about his "attitude" and "work ethic" but the bottom line is this guy is one of the most talented players in the World!! AND he wants to play for Ottawa - that alone buys him a chance with me.........
I don't think they are over the cap. Pretty sure I read that Murray was willing to spend up to $5M for Cammelleri but when the bidding went higher he had drop out.
This signing probably means no deal for Comrie, and any future trades must have the same or less salary coming here.
They're $2M over the cap according to this site.

Kovalev, at 5 million per season, is a very expensive qb on the power play. There's a reason why Gainey isn't paying that kind of coin to keep him, or Koivu, or Tanguay or Lang. Because the team stank with them. They crawled into the playoffs and might as well have not showed up to the Boston series.
Hopefully, he's as enamored with Ottawa as he claimed to be with Montreal.
Interesting. This site has them also has them over, but by around $1.3M:

It has been widely reported that Murray is trying to trade Auld, Smith, Picard, Lee and Schubert so I guess there's more moves to come. It wouldn't surprise me if Lee, Picard and/or Schubert are waived or sent to Bingo if a deal can't be made for them.
I think Kovalev will do well here. Even without Heatley he'll have some talented forwards to play with, and he won't have to provide ALL of the offence on his own. Alfie will still be the qb of the power play here - Kovalev will simply be another weapon for Clouston to put into play.
Picard just bought a house in Gatineau and he's a local kid - played minor league hockey with my brother - hope for him he's not traded...
Kovalev and Spezza??? Cool! Only one more guy needed for the "Lazy Aces" line, LOL!
So happy!!! Leafs have Defence!! Beauchemin is an amazing pick up....Good price for him 2.
Montreal is paying the same for Gill and hes nothing but a Pylon.
Burke is the man!
Good Pickup...he will bring you 80 points
Heatley must be on the move, this signing puts the Sens near the top of payroll. I guess if they cannot move Heatley they have to hope he does not show at training camp and suspend him with no pay.
how much longer does heatly have on his contract?
