Anyone have them ring your door bell?
Scam
I could not say it's a scam but they use fear as their marketing scheme... If you water tank is 10+, it's due for a change. Contact your current provider and ask them to switch the tank for a new one.
If its a rental the only cost should be associated with ensuring the pipes are up to code too.
What bugged me when they showed up to my house is that they lied about the replacement. They told me they were contracted by Direct Energy to replace the Hot Water tanks with new energy efficient ones. I asked the guy for a brochure and told him I'd research and call him if I was interested.
Turns out they're a competitor to Direct Energy even though the rental goes onto our regular bill
To me, if you lie to get a sale, I don't care how much money I will save, go away.
My two cents.
Happens all the time with some of these companies. I remember when gas distribution was being sold by marketers, more than one pretended they were from Consumers. They would ask to see your gas bill and then sign you up without you knowing.
I have a rule that I live by. I don't do business at my front door. I told that to one guy and he asked if he could come in.:wallbash
Max life for the water tanks are between 8-10 years... you can check the serial number (google) and it will tell you the year.
I would notify them in writing the age of the tank to your provider and ask for a replacement. Also, make sure that your insurance covers the water tank for possible leaks. Some insurances do not cover the water tank.
I.e. I'm currently renting a water heater for one of my condos and the by-laws for the condo corp requires to change them every 10 years. My contract with them states the same clause to replace it every 10 years.
