Pros... hmmmm I'll let GolferChick answer that
I asked hubby for the pros and cons:
Cons:Pros:
- shift work (especially night shift), he thinks it is harder on woman (out 6 on the force, 5 are on sick leave)
- work on weekends
- often can not participate in family outings because of work
- don't get to be with your family often and that takes it's toll after a while
- kids miss their dad.
- having to keep the kids quiet while he sleeps from a night shift.
- you mostly deal with "bad" people (marital disputes, suicides, child abuse....) it takes a toll on you mentally.
- lots of paper work.
Not many pros as you can see but he likes it anyway. You should aslo consider the pros and cons for yourself because you will be the main caregiver if you have children and will often be alone. We have two young children (4 and 6) and basically you end up being a single parent most of the time because of their schedule. Hope this helps. Any more questions, let me know. Good luck!:)
- Good pay and benefits.
- You get the personal satisfaction that you are helping people.
- More liberty to do things (like golf), since when everyone is at work and the kids are at schoold you are off.
- ?????
Perhaps checking if there's a civilian volunteery program with Ottawa Police and try that route first? Back in the University days, a few of us signed up. There were a number of community store front around the city. One Officer was assigned and the rest of the staff were volunteers. You get to do minor reports, but the fun part was the ride along and see how a typical day of police work is... I remembered hearing that the shifts were pretty long (10-12 hours shifts I believe) you have several days off then begin different hour shifts...
